The Mount Vernon High School science Olympiad team was the state runner-up among 19 teams in Iowa.
The Mount Vernon team was also the winner of this year’s spirit award.
Placing first for the team were: Dashiell Yaminishi, Emmett Jordan and Edith Dawson in codebusters, Jacob Cannon and Megan Teague in environmental chemistry, Lydia Benesh, Anna Vavricek and Margaret Player in experimental design, Anna Vavricek and Kyliee Pyatt in forensics, Dawson and Player in rocks and minerals, and Carington Bybee and Isaac Dausener in science in the news.
Placing second were: Jacob Cannon and Dylan Winkler in bridge, Benesh and Anna Vavricek in forestry and Emmett Jordan and Graham Vavricek in both remote sensing and trajectory.
Third places went to Graham Vavricek and Arthur Mariano in astronomy and Yaminishi and Milo Olinger in detector building.
