The Mount Vernon-Lisbon girls tennis team made its 2023 debut Thursday, March 30 at home.
The Mustangs hosted Maquoketa and Marion in the annual event, “The Walnot”, a tournament of sorts that does not involve seeding.
The tournament was named after Winston Alnot, Coach Crystal Eskelsen’s predecessor. Eskelsen was Alnot’s assistant before becoming head coach herself.
Marion took the top spot with 330 points, while Mount Vernon managed second, with 153 points. Maquoketa came in last with 138.
“We played all day,” Eskelsen said. “It was a great day of tennis. It’s a good way to get a lot of matches in.”
Jordan Bleile raked in the most points for the team, with 32. Lainey Kelly and Kelsey Kamerling and 24 and 23, respectively.”
“We are very young this year. The girls are learning fast,” said Eskelsen.
The team will next play today (Thursday, April 6) at Marion.
