Cornell’s batting lineup busted out for a season-high 16 hits in Sunday’s 12-7 nonconference baseball win over Carroll at Frame Park.
It was the first true road game of the season for coach Robbie Dombrowski’s Rams, who improved to 10-7 overall after dropping their last two contests.
Sophomore Kale Rose had a dynamic day from the No. 9 slot in Cornell’s order, going 4-for-5 with three runs, a double, a homer and two RBIs. He was among nine Rams to register a hit against the Pioneers (9-8).
Vince Zipperer, Cornell’s leading hitter on the season, singled three times, scored twice and drove in a run. Seth Beals went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Colin Konicek had two hits and one RBI.
Freshman Carson King collected his first collegiate hit, a double, and drove in two.
The Rams scored in each of the first five innings, highlighted by a four-run second in which Beals singled home a pair. Cornell’s lead ballooned to 10-2 on Zipperer’s RBI groundout in the top of the fifth.
Starting right-hander Jake Schope bumped his season record to 3-1, allowing three earned runs while fanning seven over five innings. Patrick Montagna pitched the final four frames, striking out six.
Earlier in the week, the Rams took a 6-3 loss to Grinnell.
Game 2 was halted after three innings due to a bank of field lights failure. The game will resume at a date to be determined with Grinnell leading 1-0.
The Rams took a 3-2 lead into the top of the ninth inning of the opener. Grinnell scratched for four runs on two hits and capitalized on two Cornell errors to pull ahead in its final at-bat.
The Pioneers tied it on a sacrifice fly down the left-field line and took a 4-3 lead on a bases-loaded single. Grinnell went on to tack on two more unearned runs in the frame.
Drew Logel and Colin Konicek had two hits apiece and factored into Cornell’s two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh. Logel delivered an RBI double and later scored on Konicek’s sacrifice fly that pushed the Rams ahead 3-2.
Leadoff hitter Darren Mancke drew a pair of walks, extending his consecutive reached base streak to 13 games.
Right-hander Kole Hinrichsen gave the Rams another quality start on the mound, allowing two runs while striking out five over seven innings. Carter Kriegel (1-2) took the loss in relief.
