For the first time under Coach Trent Schneider’s direction, the Cornell women’s tennis team came back from a doubles deficit to win the dual match. Junior Ashley Mink, at No. 6 singles, sent the Rams to victory, completing the comeback win over Randolph College 5-4 this afternoon at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.
The Rams fell behind after doubles heading into singles play on Tuesday, 1-2 to the Wildcats and needing to win four of the six singles matches to claim the dual. The No. 2 duo of Audrey Small and Kylie Jacobson collected their fourth straight win together and got Cornell on the board with an 8-3 triumph.
Makayla Johnson and Wies Kleingeld fell at the top spot 3-8 for the Wildcats first point of the day. No. 3 pair Mink and Josalin McKeever were narrowly edged 8-7(3).
Small concluded her spring break campaign 7-0 in her matches as she got the Rams first singles victory of the afternoon defeating Heather Whetzel 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3. Jacobson followed suit shortly after for the Rams third point of the day coasting to a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4
Johnson and Kleingeld both fell in hard fought matches in the top two spots of the lineup.
Down 3-4 in the match, freshman Ashley Drake got Cornell on the doorstep cruising to a victory of her own 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5, setting up a winner take all in the last singles match.
Mink, in control the entire match, pushed the Rams over the finish line 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6 to complete comeback.
Earlier in the week, the Rams swept the Golden Bears a 9-0 sweep of Western New England.
Cornell’s women’s tennis team brought their brooms with them today, completing a 9-0 sweep of Western New England at the Hilton Head Beach & Tennis Resort.
The Rams (8-8) got things going quickly in doubles with the duo fo Audrey Small and Kylie Jacobson winning their third straight match together capturing an 8-2 victory at No. 2. Ashley Mink and Josalin McKeever got on the board next cruising to an 8-1 triumph at No. 3. No. 1 pair Makayla Johnson and Wies Kleingeld finished the doubles sweep closing out a tightly contested match 8-7(6).
Johnson, Kleingeld, Jacobson and Mink all were straight set winners in singles play to complete 2-0 days. Ashley Drake at No. 5 posted a quick 6-0, 6-1 victory, and Emma Shipley rounded out the singles slate closing out her back and forth match at No. 6, 6-3, 1-6, 10-8.
The Rams are back on their home courts March 26 taking on Division II Truman State.
