Cornell’s men’s tennis team completed their spring break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina this afternoon, defeating Randolph College 6-3 in their finale at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.
The Rams, now 6-8 on the season, swept all three doubles matches beginning with Zachary Ong and Chris Penas-Hull cruising to an 8-0 shutout at No. 2. The No. 3 pair of Edwin Holyoake and August Krahn collected their second win together of the trip claiming an 8-2 victory. Juniors Alexander Hadler-Strumlauf and Federico Polidori finished the doubles sweep winning 8-5 at No. 1.
Cornell kept the momentum going and split the six singles matches with the Wildcats. Ong (6-3, 6-0) at No. 2, Holyoake (6-2, 6-2) at No. 4, and Jackson Smock (6-1, 6-1) at No. 6 all were straight set winners in the dual to give the Rams their sixth win of the year.
Randolph captured straight set wins at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 5.
Earlier in the week, the Rams picked up a 7-2 loss to Shenandoah.
Edwin Holyoake provided a bright spot for the Rams winning a pair of matches today. Holyoake pulled through in a thrilling singles match defeating Brenton Baugh 4-6, 7-5, 10-8, and also partnered up with August Krahn for an 8-4 victory at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Cornell No. 1 player Alexander Hadler-Strumlauf suffered his first singles loss of the spring break trip to the hands of Shenandoah’s Jovan Cirkovic, coming up just short in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 3-6.
The Hornets won the remaining doubles positions and swept the rest of the singles matches to close out the dual match.
The Rams return to the courts for a double header at home against University of Dubuque and Greenville University Saturday, March 25.
