Council sets April 17 as hearing date for budget
The third time is hopefully the charm for the City of Mount Vernon’s budget hearing now scheduled for April 17.
The meeting has been rescheduled to April 17 after the state government passed Senate File 181, which allows city to set their budgets by May 1.
City administrator Chris Nosbisch said the city knows what impact the rollback will have on the city budget for next year, with a difference of $47,500.
Nosbisch said that he would still recommend taking the levy rate up $0.16 per $1,000 as he previously recommended, and not doing any additional changes to the budget for the next year.
City getting more trees
The City of Mount Vernon will be receiving 100 trees for free, thanks to the Monarch Research Project.
The goal of the project is to improve trees in the right of way and plant trees native to Iowa.
Information on the trees and the project are available at Mount Vernon City Hall.
