Junior Chris Penas-Hull scored the dual-clinching win in Cornell’s 5-4 victory over Simpson Saturday morning in the arena of the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.
The Rams fell 6-3 to UW-Stevens Point in the day’s finale, moving the team’s season record to 3-3.
In the opener, Penas-Hull broke a 4-4 team tie against Simpson with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ethan Humble at No. 4 singles to seal the meet. He improved to 6-3 in singles play this season.
Cornell rallied to take four of the six singles matches, which included straight-set wins from No. 1 Alexander Hadler-Strumlauf (6-1, 6-2), No. 2 Federico Polidori (6-4, 6-4) and No. 3 Zachary Ong (6-4, 6-0). Cornell’s No. 1 pair of Polidori and Hadler-Strumlauf prevailed 8-4.
Ong accounted for two victories against UW-Stevens Point, highlighted by a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Hayden Schreier in singles. Ong partnered with Penas-Hull for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles.
The Rams received a 6-3, 6-2 win from No. 6 singles player Jackson Smock. Penas-Hull was edged 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 4.
Cornell came up just short by identical 8-6 scores at the No. 1 and 3 doubles positions.
