The Lisbon Lions girls varsity basketball squad pulled off an upset of 13-3 Marquette Catholic on the road Tuesday, Jan. 17, defeating their Tri-Rivers Conference foes 60-51.
The Lions held a slight 30-28 edge at the half, ending the third quarter with a 41-37 lead, and outscoring the home team 19-14 in the fourth to clinch the win.
Head coach Diamond Ruth attributed the victory to following the game plan “to a T.”
“Our defense was phenomenal. Our help defense was even better. We talked to each other, a lot, to make sure of that. We moved the ball around very, very well, and waited until we got the open shot. We worked together to make things happen and to not let Marquette over take the game,” said Ruth.
“Our kids were excited for one another, they were happy to see each other succeed, and they were happy to be there together to overcome.
“Overall, it was a great team effort, and we’re extremely proud of our kids, and continuing to prepare for the end of the season and post-season. It’s been really great so far,” Coach Ruth said.
Kali Nelson led all scorers in the contest with 26, while also contributing six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Peyton Robinson added 13 points along with 13 boards, four assists, and four steals.
The win over Marquette Catholic, ranked second in Tri-Rivers competition, positioned the third-place Lions closer to unseating the host team, but still short of their goal.
