The team only had one game on their docket for the week, but the Mustangs made it count.
The Mount Vernon boys basketball team hosted the South Tama Trojans Tuesday, Dec. 13, and never really let them get close, winning 69-44 and improving to 5-1 overall.
The first quarter ended with the Mustangs up 22-11, and the teams went to the marker board at the half with a score of 40-19.
Mount Vernon outscored their guests 20-18 in the third period, but the fourth quarter found the Trojans giving about as good as they got, scoring 18 to their hosts’ 20 points.
“We tried to contain the ball defensively,” said Mustangs head coach Derek Roberts.
Their efforts forced the visiting team into some trouble with the shot clock, a new feature in local high school sports.
“We’re trying to use that to our advantage this year,” Roberts said.
The Mustangs also enjoyed a height advantage over South Tama, the coach said, so their strategy became to get the ball inside when possible.
Mount Vernon junior Jackson Kutcher led both teams with 26 points, five rebounds, and three steals.
“He’s always going to be rock-solid shooting the ball for us. He does a good job, flies around and makes plays for us, and helps lead our team.”
The Mustangs currently enjoy a narrow lead over West Delaware in the WaMaC-East conference.
