The Mount Vernon varsity girls basketball team broke even last week, nabbing a blowout win over South Tama on the road before dropping a close contest to their fourth top-10 team they had faced in their past five games.
Tuesday, Dec. 13
The Mustangs took a decisive 69-12 victory Tuesday over the South Tama Trojans at South Tama for a WaMaC cross-division matchup.
It was a reprieve of sorts for Mount Vernon, who had played three straight games against top-10 opponents.
The visiting team took a 20-10 lead after the first frame, and never looked back. The Mustangs outscored their hosts 28-0 in the second quarter, boasting a 49-10 lead at the half.
The final three quarters of the game, in other words, found Mount Vernon outscoring the host team 56-2.
Five Mustangs scored in the double digits, led by sophomore Eryn Jackson’s 18, a game-high. Freshman Taylor Franck came off the bench to score 12 points, a career-high for the young athlete.
Lilly See and Peyton Simpson each nabbed 12 points as well, while Brynley Rasmussen added 10 of her own.
The Trojans shot just 17 percent from the field while the Mustangs were good for 55 percent.
Thursday, Dec. 15 Two nights later, the Mustangs hosted Iowa City Regina. The Regals were 7-1 coming into the contest, and yet another top-10 ranked team.
The hosts were up 5-0 in the early minutes, but Regina traded shots with the Mustangs for the rest of the half, opening up a slight 25-22 lead on the strength of seven three-pointers from the Regals.
After tying the game at 30 with three minutes remaining in the third period, a series of turnovers led to Regina taking a 36-32 lead into the fourth.
The Regals capitalized on their momentum, turning their slight lead into a 45-36 edge with 2:20 remaining on the clock.
Brynley Rasmussen scored two consecutive buckets for the home team, cutting the lead to 45-40.
Regina hit a free throw, and Peyton Simpson scored on an offensive put-back to bring the Mustangs within reach at 46-42, but they could not close the four-point gap.
Rasmussen and Lilly See led Mount Vernon’s offense with 11 points apiece. Eryn Jackson and Peyton Simpson each chipped in seven.
See had nine rebounds, two blocks, and two steals, while Kameron Brand pulled in six boards and a steal.
