Linn County Public Health (LCPH) is partnering with local pharmacies to provide testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) at no charge.
STIs can cause serious issues if left untreated. Infections can cause infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, cancer, increased pain and inflammation, loss of vision or hearing, or death. Linn County is experiencing high rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. A majority of STIs are spread through direct sexual contact and occur among individuals 15 to 24 years of age.
“Sexual health is healthcare,” said Dr. Pramod Dwivedi, Linn County Public Health director. “Many STIs may not cause obvious symptoms. However, those infections may still cause harm and spread to others. Early detection and treatment are important for your health and the health of our community. Partnering with pharmacies allows for greater access to STI testing services.”
Linn County Public Health, Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, local pharmacies, and Let’s Get Checked are partnering to offer STI testing in the comfort of your local pharmacy or your own home. It’s simple, confidential, and discreet. Individuals must be 18 years of age to access this service.
