The newly-sanctioned Mount Vernon girls wrestling squad picked up another win and a second place finish in play last week.
On Thursday, Dec. 8, the team hosted Clear Creek-Amana on its home turf in its very first home wrestling event and won the dual 48-18.
Earning wins for the Mustang wrestlers in the match were Mae Stoops (190), Aly Lashley (235), Ellie Shebetka (120), Claire Gaffney (125), Kaylee Kintzel (145), Addison Gookin (155) and Libby Dix (170).
Gaffney won an extra match over Emma Descourouez of Clear Creek-Amana and Kintzel also had another win over Malina Bowman.
Saturday, Dec. 10Two days later, the squad took a short trip to Marion to take part in the Marion Invitational.
“I’m just extremely proud of how hard the girls competed,” said Mustangs head coach Trevor Trende.
“With two girls being out, and going into a 24-team tournament, we battled and wrestled hard,” the coach said.
Mount Vernon placed second at the tournament with a score of 148.
The girls had first place finishes from Dix, Lashley, Gracie Pickney, Shebetka, Stoops and Kiersten Swart. Kintzel and Gookin had second place finishes.
Ashlynn Carter-Shook, Meika Neal and Kasey Nevins had third place finishes, while Gaffney and Ella Krob had fourth place finishes at the meet.
