The Lisbon girls basketball team dropped a pair of decisions last week, but Lions head coach Diamond Ruth sees a lot to be commended.
“We are very happy with the progress that we’ve been making so far this season,” said Ruth.
“Every game, we have improved at things that we’ve been working on to get better. We have a group of kids that want to work hard, and want to do it as a family. Not everyone has that mindset, and we’re very thankful that we do,” the coach said.
Following the losses to Marquette Catholic and Springville, the Lions would play Cal-Wheat Tuesday at home, and can be caught in action Friday, Dec. 16 at Easton Valley.
“We’re ready to work hard,” said Coach Ruth.
Tuesday. Dec. 6The team hosted Marquette Catholic to kick off the week, and were slow to start against the visiting team, with Marquette getting off to an 18-9 start after a quarter of play.
“Marquette has some tough players, and they came out in the first quarter and couldn’t miss, which dug us into a hole that we had to battle back from right away,” Coach Ruth said.
“We saw some really good things climbing out, but couldn’t quite make it in the end. The effort and desire was there, though, and that’s what we needed. They never gave up,” said the coach.
Kali Nelson led the team in scoring with 14 points, while chipping in six rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Sophomore Addie Clark supported the senior’s effort with 10 points of her own, along with three boards.
Thursday, Dec. 8 The contest at Springville was decided by a razor-thin margin. The two teams were locked at 12 after the first quarter, and the Lions led by just one point, 25-24, at the half.
The Orioles were slightly more successful than their hosts in the third, chalking up 14 points compared to the Lions’ 10.
“It was very equal until the third quarter,” said Ruth.
“We made some silly errors, and they had a run. But instead of giving up, it put a fire under us, and we battled back until the very end. Those losses are tough, battling back and losing in that way, but they kept their heads high, and we’re looking forward to getting better this week,” the coach said.
