Kirkwood Community College are offering EMT and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician courses in the spring 2023 semester.
Jackie Kalen, with the health occupation classes noted that the EMT and AEMT programs, as well as paramedic courses, are something is needed.
“We know that many of the classes when they are offered are harder for full-time employees to attend in person,” Kalen said. “That’s why we’re offering online EMT and AEMT classes that will be available via Zoom and other options.”
Kalen said this will allow people to view the lectures whenever that works in their schedules.
Students will have to attend skills set and hands on training at local EMS facilities or Kirkwood itself a few times.
“We know there aren’t as many applying to be part of the EMS personnel, especially in rural communities, and this is a way to increase those taking part in these classes,” Kalen said.
The EMT and AEMT courses currently being offered are continuing education courses.
Lisbon-Mount Vernon Ambulance Service director Jacob Lindauer said that five volunteers have signed up from LMVAS for the classes, with an additional four from the Mount Vernon Fire Department.
