A 27-point scoring spree in the fourth quarter carried Cornell’s women’s basketball team to a 77-66 nonconference victory over Central Saturday afternoon inside Kuyper Gymnasium.
Senior post Madison Wauters netted 11 of her game-high 19 points during Cornell’s fourth-quarter surge. She was equally dominant on the glass, grabbing a career-best 18 rebounds, including 11 offensive. It was Wauters’ second double-double in as many contests this season.
Senior Megan Gandrup had the hot shooting hand for the Rams, draining five 3-pointers and finishing with 16 points. She also collected eight rebounds.
Freshman Karli Artman gave the Rams 12 points off the bench, connecting on three 3-pointers. Ani’ja Simmons provided eight points and eight rebounds. Madison Osborn added eight points on perfect 8-of-8 shooting from the free throw line against her former teammates.
Kali March and Osborn each dished four assists. March came away with three of the team’s 10 steals.
Cornell took a 38-24 lead into intermission and led by as many as 19 points in the third quarter. The Dutch trimmed the margin to 68-64 with less than two minutes to play. March drilled a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession that essentially put the game away.
Earlier in the week, Coe ran away with a 57-52 win against the Rams.
Wauters recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. March and Osborn netted 10 points apiece for the Rams (0-1), who opened the contest on a 14-3 run.
The Kohawks (1-0) gained momentum in the second half and built their largest lead at 51-44 with 5:10 remaining. Cornell came back and closed within 51-50 on a bucket by Simmons with 1:28 left to play.
On the ensuing possession, Coe beat the shot clock with a long 3-pointer from the top of the key. The Kohawks then forced a turnover and hit two free throws to put the game out of reach.
The Kohawks earned one point in the 2022-23 Bremner Cup All-Sport Series, which they led 4-2 going into the men’s basketball game Wednesday night.
The Rams pressured Coe into 25 turnovers, led by Osborn’s four steals. March and Karli Artman added three steals apiece.
