Lisbon Schools is discussing offering an early retirement plan again this year.
Business manager Laurie Maher said the school has a robust management fund they have been padding the fund with additional monies the past few years.
Maher said looking at the current staff at Lisbon, only two certified staff would meet the rule of 88 (years of experience in teaching with their age) that is used to determine early retirement, and offered for certified and non-certified staff.
“After multiple years of offering early retirement packages, our staff is a lot younger than it used to be,” Maher said.
Board member Robyn Richey said she was more reticent to offer early retirement this year, citing the issues the district had in hiring a science teacher this past school year.
“That shortage of employment in a subject is something I’d like to avoid,” Richey said.
Board member John Prasil said he still thinks early retirement is a good program, and that it benefits the bottom line of the district.
“If we are offering early retirement, I think we should offer early retirement earlier so we can work on filling their positions,” Prasil said.
The district tabled any action until the November school board meeting.
