Art is abundant in the Mount Vernon and Lisbon communities.
From Chalk the Walk, to the successful art programs at both schools, there’s not a shortage of visual art opportunities for students in our area. We have talented artists who explore a plethora of mediums.
We have adult artists who do the same, with Mount Vernon Creates hosting a “Portrayal of Mount Vernon” art show and contest every year.
We have large scale murals in Mount Vernon on a few buildings, and pieces painted by local artists Mickey Woods, Mark Benesh and others in uptown businesses.
We feel the idea of a sculpture trail between Mount Vernon Area Arts Council and the Mount Vernon Parks and Recreation commission is advancing those artistic options and giving more artists a chance to showcase along another of Mount Vernon’s favorite activities, exercise and being outdoors.
That the idea is in early discussions is good for both entities, but there are some areas that need to be clarified, however, especially when it comes to maintenance, preservation and care for the sculptures. Especially if they are to remain upright in Iowa’s harsh winters.
We also agree with council member Paul Tuerler that coming with a more dedicated funding stream or planning for this during budget time for funding this coming year could be beneficial so dedicated trail funds can remain focused on needed maintenance and improvements to the current or future trails systems.
Giving more space for more permanent art in Mount Vernon is something worthwhile and something the arts council continues to fund in these communities and we look forward to the further discussions and development of this new project in the community.
