The Mount Vernon-Lisbon varsity cross country squad hit the ground running, opening their season with a home meet in the Mount Vernon Invitational.
The girls squad placed second at the Aug. 23 event, while the boys came in fourth.
“Lourdes Mason ran an incredible race,” head coach Cory Swart noted. Mason took the top spot to win the meet, coming in first at a time of 18:50.60. The finish helped propel the Mustangs to the second spot of 11 teams. Dubuque Hempstead, the defending 4A state champions, came in first.
“Laura Swart got off to a really nice start this season in fourth place, and Emrie Johnson and Kiersten Swart also medaled in the freshman/sophomore division,” said Swart.
Sophomore Grady Olberding ran a 30-second personal record from last year with a time of 17:17.20, placing eighth and leading the boys team. Additionally, Dawson Scheil grabbed a medal in the freshman/sophomore division.
“We got a little spread out from 1-5 this first meet, but will have to pack it up a little tighter if we want to improve on the team score,” Coach Swart said.
“It was a great first meet, but there is still a lot of work left to be done. Both teams should be fun to watch this season.”
