Linn County is pleased to welcome Dustin Peterson as the new director of Linn County Veteran Affairs. Peterson’s first day with Linn County was July 25.
Peterson is an Iowa native and recently retired from the United States Marine Corps with the rank Master Gunnery Sergeant following 24 years of honorable service. He was most recently based at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri where he was responsible for the education, training, and supervision of more than 150 military personnel. Peterson deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan. He specialized in military Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) defense education, training, coordination, and management. Peterson is also a graduate of Arizona State University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science.
As Veteran Affairs Director for Linn County, Peterson will oversee and administer the operation of the Linn County Commission of Veteran Affairs (LCCVA), implement the LCCVA general policy, direct assistance programs for eligible veterans and their dependents to ensure that they apply for and receive all benefits due them, and supervise staff.
“Throughout my Marine Corps career, I have helped hundreds of Marines transition from active service back to their communities. As a leader of Marines, my goal was always to return contributing members back to society and ensure a positive transition. This passion will allow me and the staff of Linn County Veterans Affairs to reach, educate, and advocate for all veterans within Linn County.”
The Linn County Veteran Affairs Department has accredited County Veteran Service Officers (CVSOs) who are trained on the most current scope, significance, and application of ever-changing federal, state, and local laws. Staff works with the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs and other local organizations to help veterans and their eligible family members receive the maximum benefits they have rightfully earned.
