The Lisbon Lions baseball team ended a season for the ages with a tough battle with the 33-3 Mason City Newman Catholic Knights, ultimately dropping the fight 3-2.
The Lions were in Carroll’s Merchants Park Monday, July 18, for the 1A state baseball quarterfinal game — for the second year in a row.
Lisbon went scoreless in the top half of the first inning, while the Knights posted one run in the bottom.
The Knights loaded up the bases in the bottom of the third, but only managed to score two additional runs in the inning, assuming a 3-0 lead.
The Lions responded at the top of the fourth with two runs of their own, clipping the lead to 3-2. Cohen Kamaus and Tyson Scott were responsible for the two runs, ending the game with an RBI each.
The score would stall at 3-2, and the Knights would advance to the next round.
Doug Taylor took the win at pitcher for Newman Catholic, pitching seven innings and striking out 12.
Hunter Clark shouldered the loss for the Lions at the mound, throwing for six innings and striking out nine.
The Lions 2022 season ended with the team at 24-6, and will resume next year without seniors Tyson and Tyler Scott.
