Cornell traveled to Wisconsin Saturday and split a pair of Midwest Conference men’s tennis duals, highlighted by a 5-4 victory over Lawrence at Fox Cities Racquet Club.
The Rams finished their trip with a 6-3 setback to Ripon.
Alexander Hadler-Strumlauf and Justin Mendez earned two wins apiece to lead the Rams (7-12 overall, 1-3 MWC) in a tight meet at Lawrence (4-12 overall, 2-2 MWC). The two partnered for an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles. Hadler-Strumlauf at No. 1 (7-5, 6-4) and Mendez at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0) won their respective singles matches in straight sets.
Cornell’s No. 2 doubles team of Chris Penas-Hull and Edwin Holyoake claimed an 8-6 decision. At No. 6 singles, freshman Orion Mason prevailed 7-6, 6-3.
Hadler-Strumlauf and Mendez accounted for all three of Cornell’s team points at Ripon (7-6 overall, 4-1 MWC). They took an 8-3 win at the No. 1 doubles position.
Hadler-Strumlauf beat Ripon’s No. 1 singles player 6-2, 6-4. Mendez was victorious 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3.
The Rams close the regular season next Saturday, April 16 with MWC duals at home against Illinois College at 9 a.m. and Monmouth at 3 p.m.
