UW-Platteville jumped ahead early in both softball games Sunday and held off the Rams late for a 7-2, 7-4 nonconference sweep at Pioneer Stadium.
The Rams (2-13) got behind 5-0 after two innings in the opener. Freshman pitcher Eva Stewart came on in relief and did not surrender an earned run over the final four innings.
Caitlin Babcock recorded two of Cornell’s five hits in Game 1 and drove in one run. Erin Puck scored one run and stole two bases. Addie Bowman was 1-for-3 with a run.
Cornell rallied from 3-0 and 5-2 deficits to get within striking distance in the second game. Freshman shortstop Sydni Coleman delivered a two-run single in the top of the sixth that brought the Rams within 5-4. Cornell wound up stranding two runners in the sixth and left nine on base for the game.
The Rams received two hits apiece from Coleman, Olivia Richards and Bowman. Puck doubled home two runs. Babcock singled to extend her hitting streak to five games.
UW-Platteville (8-8) outhit Cornell, 16-10, in Game 2.
Cornell is scheduled to host Dubuque for a 4 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday at Van Metre Family Softball Field.
