The Mount Vernon varsity wrestling squad were the champs in the Class 2A sectionals at Benton Community Saturday.
The Mustangs placed first with 230 points, ahead of second-place Williamsburg, who finished with 214. Six teams competed in all.
Eight Mustangs qualified for this Saturday’s districts in Williamsburg, where they will wrestle for a chance to go to the state tournament. Those wrestlers include Klayten Perreault (106), Jackson Jaspers, Henry Ryan, Clark Younggreen, Croix Shebetka, Jackson Rhomberg, Jackson Hird and Zatyk Holub.
“You always want to get a few more through,” said assistant coach Aaron Truitt.
Still, said Truitt, “we’ve had a good season.”
It’s been fun to watch the kids compete, the coach indicated, “and cheer for each other, rally around each other. It’s pretty rewarding to see.”
