The Mount Vernon Mustang girls continued through their growing pains last week with losses at home Tuesday to Williamsburg, and Friday by a larger margin to Center Point-Urbana.
Tuesday, Nov. 30Their first home game of the week saw the Mustangs defeated by the Williamsburg Raiders 47-39.
“We played well for the majority of the game, leading by as many as 13 early in the third quarter,” said first-year Mustangs head coach Nate Sanderson.
“In the fourth, Williamsburg turned up the defensive pressure and we turned the ball over eight times, allowing them to tie the score with 3:30 to play.
“Unfortunately, we weren’t able to capitalize on some opportunities to regain the lead, and the Raiders were able to put the game away at the foul line late,” Sanderson said.
Friday, Dec. 3The Mustangs played host to CPU Friday, with the Stormin’ Pointers storming points on the home team and winning 66-31.
Coach Sanderson called no. 5 CPU “perhaps the hottest team in the WaMaC,” and said the team’s “relentless pressure” led to the Stormin’ Pointers’ early advantage.
A 14-0 CPU run to start the third quarter, Sanderson said, made it difficult to get back within striking distance.
“Our kids deserve a lot of credit for how they continue to battle despite the disappointing loss on Tuesday, and a blowout loss on Friday,” he said.
“Though our progress has been incremental, it has also been undeniable. We are getting better, slowly but surely,” said Sanderson.
Friday, Dec. 10, the Mustangs would travel to take on 1-2 Clear Creek-Amana.
