The Lisbon Lions varsity wrestling squad opened their 2021-22 season with a sweep of every team they faced, going 3-0 Tuesday at New London, and becoming Cliff Keen Independence Individual champs on Saturday.
At Tuesday’s match, the Lions crowned champs against New London, with Brandon Paez (120) taking a win by way of technical fall, Quincy Happel (126) a win via fall, Cade Siebrecht (138) a win via fall, Max Kohl (182) a win in a decision and Jamien Moore (195) a win in a fall.
Wyatt Smith (285), Wesley Sadler (106), Indy Harbaugh (145), Junior Krob (170) and Indy Ferguson (220) picked up wins via forfeit.
Against West Liberty, Paez, Happel, Harbaugh, Matthias Kohl, Max Kohl, Harbaugh, Lincoln Holub (160) and Ferguson all earned wins by fall.
Lucas Capron (113), Siebrecht, and Wyatt Smith all picked up wins due to forfeits.
Against North Mahaska, Lisbon had wins from Ferguson (major decision), Sadler (decision), Happel (fall), Tiernan Boots (132) (fall), Siebrecht (fall), Harbaugh (decision), Holub (fall), Krob (fall), Kohl (fall), and Moore (fall). Paez picked up a win via forfeit.
Friday, Dec. 3Lisbon won the Cliff Keen Independence Individual champs with 362.5 points. Independence came in second with 346, Osage third with 290, Crestwood fourth with 249, Alburnett fifth with 239, Union/LaPorte City sixth with 230.5, Carlisle seventh with 221.5, Notre Dame Burlington eighth with 221 points, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows ninth with 220 points and South Tama County with 210 points.
The Lions had a first place finish in the competition from Brandon Paez (120).
Second place finishes at the competition went to Quincy Happel (126) and Cade Siebrecht (138).
Max Kohl (182) and Wyatt Smith (285) had third place finishes.
Lincoln Holub had a fourth place finish for the Lions, and the team picked up fifth place finishes from Tiernan Boots, Indy Harbaugh and Jamien Moore.
