The Mount Vernon varsity volleyball team clashed with the Marion Wolves Tuesday of last week before experiencing ups and downs Saturday at the Westside Classic at Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
Tuesday, Oct. 5The Wolves (26-6), the home team, defeated the Mustangs 3-2, with sets of 25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 22-25, and 15-8.
Madeleine Miller, a junior for Mount Vernon, had 44 assists in the match, adding to her previous season total of 709.
Saturday, Oct. 9 The Mustangs were split at Cedar Rapids Jefferson at the Westside Classic Saturday, defeating Grundy Center and Cedar Rapids Jefferson, but losing to West Liberty and Dike-New Hartford.
Mount Vernon beat the 23-13 Grundy Center Spartans 2-1 with sets of 21-12, 18-21, and 18-16.
They bested the Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawks (8-19) 2-0 with 21-14 and 21-15.
The 26-2 West Liberty Comets rolled over the Mustangs 2-0 25-23 and 21-19.
Predictably, the 40-1 Dike-New Hartford Wolverines were an obstacle for the Mustangs, defeating them in two sets 25-10, and 25-12.
