Lisbon’s Sauerkraut Days Saturday evening band will be New Trick.
“We have been watching the Sauerkraut Days festival for a few years now, and are excited to finally hit the stage and bring our band of classic rock to Sauerkraut Days,” said Frank Mason, drummer with New Trick.
New Trick has been playing for the past 12 years as a band, but made the focus five years ago to focus their sound on just traditional classic rock music, according to Mason.
“We stay true to that genre,” Mason said. “We have played all over Iowa — first in bars and small venues years ago to strictly large venues, festivals and fairs.
“I think that most of our audiences enjoy our sound. It’s full, it’s songs they know and love. It’s really fun to interact, see heads moving, dancing, enjoying time with friends and our audiences truly having a great time.”
Mason said like many bands, COVID-19 impacted their schedule, taking the 12 shows and festivals they had scheduled last summer and postponing the shows to 2021 or canceled altogether.
“It feels wonderful to be able to interact with audiences again,” Mason said. “Since we travel so much throughout Iowa and surrounding states the impact on us was huge initially but we have come back in full force in 2021.”
Mason said the band has wanted to play Sauerkraut Days if the opportunity ever arose, and the committee offered them a chance to play, after being recommended by several people as a band for the stage.
Mason said that the band has artists of all different ages, with musical tastes as varied as the band member’s ages.
“No matter the individual age, we all grew up with classic rock,” Mason said. “What we do resonates with our audiences. Bands like Boston, Journey, Foreigner, 38 Special AC/DC and more is what our audiences like, know and what to hear from us.”
Alongside Mason, Daren Barker plays guitar and lead vocals in the band. Barker has been a member of the band since 2015, and aside from some time pursuing some recording opportunities, he’s now back.
Mason grew up in Dubuque and was a founding member of New Trick. He has played as a member of the Hawkeye Marching Band, and formed New Trick in 2009. Mason is also someone who can be seen behind the wheels of the No. 10 Dirt Late Model race car at tracks all across Iowa.
Ryan Roling plays lead guitar and vocals. Roling has been in several bands over the years. Roling’s passion for music and obsession with the guitar is apparent when he is learning new material as he recreates not only the music, but the tones of the guitars used on the song. He is always making sure he is playing the right guitar for the song and constantly trying out new gear to capture “that sound” from the original recordings.
Bruce Bingman plays bass and vocals.
Bingman began with musical experience playing a trombone, and transitioned to electric bass back in 1987. Bingman studied jazz in Flint, Mich., and has played in a variety of small and big bands. Bingman played a show backing Clifton Davis, Jr., in Philadelphia.
After moving to Iowa, Bingman had time finding a band in his schedule. When he made a job change in 2018, he was able to join the band New Trick.
