Join the fun and read your favorite poem during Community Poetry Night Friday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mount Vernon Creates. This will be the second annual community poetry event sponsored by Mount Vernon Creates, Mount Vernon Area Arts Council and the Mount Vernon/Lisbn Poet Laureate.
If you would like to read let Amelia Kibbie (Poet Laureate for the City of Mount Vernon) or Denise Murphy (Mount Vernon Creates) know ahead of time. There will be a roster; however, there should be time for those that want to read and are not signed up. Preference will be given to those who signed up in advance.
Light snacks will be provided and there will be a cash bar for wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages. Outside beverages are not allowed.
Mount Vernon and Lisbon band camps being held Both Lisbon High School Band and Mount Vernon High School band will be concluding marching band camp Friday, Aug. 6.
The Lisbon Marching Band camp was held 1 to 4:30 p.m. every day this week at the Lisbon High School.
The Mount Vernon Marching Band camp was held every day this week as well. The Mount Vernon Marching Band will conclude with the Parade-A-Thon in Mount Vernon, beginning at 6 p.m. Parade will begin at the First Street Community Center and conclude at Don Stine’s home. The parade will then begin again at Cornell College dorms on Third Street S.W. and through the Stonebrook housing development before concluding on Palisades Road.
Auditions for
The House of Blue LeavesMount Vernon-Lisbon Community Theatre announces auditions for its fall production, John Guare’s The House of Blue Leaves, a dark comedy to be performed Oct. 9, 10, 16, 17 and 18. Auditions will be held Sunday, Aug. 15, and Monday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Uptown Theatre at the First Street Community Center, 221 1st St. NE, Mount Vernon.
The House of Blue Leaves is set in Sunnyside, Queens on Oct. 4, 1965, the day Pope Paul VI visited New York City. Artie, a songwriting zookeeper, is joined at various times in his apartment by his mentally ill wife Bananas, his girlfriend Bunny, and his AWOL son Ronnie. Supporting roles include Artie’s best friend Billy Einhorn, visiting actress Corrinna Stroller, several nuns who want to see the pope, a policeman and The White Man.
Kerry Covington is directing. Parts are available for actors 18 and over; no preparation is necessary to audition. Questions may be emailed to [email protected].
