Editor's note: Matt Kroul is being inducted into the Mount Vernon Alumni Association Hall of Fame this week. A multi-sport standout, Kroul helped the Mustangs to the state football championship finals for two straight years. He went on to play for the University of Iowa and for the New York Jets. Cornell College alum Rob Poggenklass wrote these stories about the Mustangs' return home following a 38-35 loss to Harlan in the 2003 Class 3A state championship, as well as a story that ran during wrestling about Kroul signing with the Hawkeyes.

The Mount Vernon-Lisbon cross country teams competed at Noelridge Park and Benton Community last week. At Noelridge, the Mustangs competed against several Class 4A schools and some tough competition. At Benton, the teams were from smaller schools.

The Class 3A, ninth-rated Mount Vernon volleyball team earned two solid conference wins last week over Solon and Williamsburg. Saturday, the Mustangs competed at the Caroline Found Invitational at Iowa City West.

Editor's note: In a letter to the editor, Donald Typer offered a first-hand account of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. More of the explanation is given as it appeared in the Sept. 14, 1972 issue of the local paper. We will note that the same issue included a couple stories about sports facilities in Lisbon. Lisbon played its first football game on Walmer Field, which was constructed that summer. It wasn't under the lights, however, since the crossbars to hold them weren't delivered on time due to a truck fire in Chicago. In addition, the city council voted to lease ball fields to the school, which was responsible for maintaining them.
