Hometown Teams follow-up
December 15, 2017
Editor's note: This is a continuation of the Dec. 7 Hometown Teams story, which recounted people worried about loved ones in the Pacific theater of war following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Sam Koch's photo was on the front page, declaring he had safely returned from Manila just prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. He re-enlisted in January 1942, and returned to the Pacific theater. Sadly, Koch was also the first soldier to pass away from the Mount Vernon area, passing away on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1942, while in service to his country. This is a republication of that story, as published in the Mount Vernon Hawkeye-Record on Thursday, Jan. 7, 1943.
